Charles Wieder is a free-lance artist/illustrator specializing in figures and portraits. He has himself written and illustrated and collaborated on children’s books and other educational projects. He holds degrees from Stanford University, Queens College C.U.N.Y., Univ. of Arizona, and the School of Art and Design (NYC). He has been a faculty member in the Art Department at Southern Conn. State Univ. since 1989, and prior to that was affiliated with Univ. of Kansas, Univ. of NC-Appalachian State, Ohio State U., and Florida State U. He has also worked as a graphic artist for Fern Press, Graphic Industries, and J.G. Advertising, all in NYC. Awards he has received include the James Madison Univ. Scholars Award, Shandling Lithographic Award, St. Gaudins Medal for Scholarship, and Long Island Art Teachers Assoc. Award. The rich, textural rendering technique of Wieder’s work is tradition-based, primarily in B&W drawing media. The subject matter portrays figures and character studies, conveying human dignity in simple settings. The figures interact – at work and study and play – typically reflecting uplifting themes of collaboration, playfulness, and industriousness. Commissions range upwards from $300.
